The overall objective of Swedish environmental policy is to leave the next generation (in 2020) with a society where the principal environmental problems have been resolved. To further this endeavour, the Swedish Parliament has adopted 16 environmental quality objectives, broken down into 72 interim targets (Gov. Bill 2000/01:130; Gov. Bill 2004/05:150).The environmental quality objectives are the following:

5) A Protective Ozone Layer
6) A Safe Radiation Environment
7) Zero Eutrophication
8) Flourishing Lakes and Streams

11) Thriving Wetlands
12) Sustainable Forests
13) A Varied Agricultural Landscape
14) A Magnificent Mountain landscape
15) A Good Built Environment
16) A Rich Diversity of Plant and Animal Life
