PRESS RELEASE
CONSUMER TENDENCY SURVEY, JANUARY 2010

Households remain somewhat more positive than normal

The Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI) rose barely one point to 8.5 between December and January. This level is somewhat above the historic average, indicating that consumer confidence in the economic situation is somewhat more positive than normal. This picture is supported by the Micro Index, which measures consumer confidence in personal finances and has risen 0.4 points. However, consumer confidence in the Swedish economy is somewhat more negative than last month and the Macro Index has fallen 1.5 points.
Personal finances: Households remain positive about their current personal finances, although they are less positive than previous months. They are somewhat more confident about the development of personal finances in the next 12 months, with 30 per cent of households expecting an improvement in their personal finances in the future, compared with 26 per cent last month. Attitudes to whether it is currently the right time to purchase consumer durables remain negative, but less negative than last month, while plans to make such purchases in the future are somewhat more restrained than last month. Fewer households expect to be able to save in the next 12 months.

Swedish economy: Household attitudes to the current Swedish economy have gradually improved and continued to improve somewhat this month. Expectations about the development of the Swedish economy in the next 12 months remain optimistic, while unemployment expectations are more pessimistic. However, households consider that their own risk of unemployment has declined.

Inflation and wage expectations: Household inflation expectations one year ahead were 2.4 per cent in January, compared with 2.3 per cent last month. 12-month wage increase expectations were 2.6 per cent, a marginal increase on last month when the equivalent figure was 2.5 per cent.
