Konjunkturbarometern The Economic Tendency Indicator, which measures business and consumer confidence in the economic situation, rose just over two points between December and January to 103.4. This is the indicator´s highest level since March 2008. All sectors made a positive contribution to this rise.

Business: Increasingly optimistic business sector
The confidence indicator for the business sector rose 15 points between the third and fourth quarters of 2009. It has risen nearly 40 points from its lowest level in the first quarter of 2009 and is currently considerably above the historic average.

Consumer: Households remain somewhat more positive than normal
The Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI) rose barely one point to 8.5 between December and January. This level is somewhat above the historic average, indicating that consumer confidence in the economic situation is somewhat more positive than normal. This picture is supported by the Micro Index, which measures consumer confidence in personal finances and has risen 0.4 points. However, consumer confidence in the Swedish economy is somewhat more negative than last month and the Macro Index has fallen 1.5 points.


Revision of the Consumer Tendency Survey due to new supplier

The National Institute of Economic Research has appointed a new supplier for the Consumer Tendency Survey. CMA Research won the procurement process and will conduct the survey up to and including 2014. The change of supplier entails retrospective revision of the Consumer Tendency Survey.

Konjunkturbarometern The Economic Tendency Indicator, which measures business and consumer confidence in the economic situation, rose from 98.9 in November to 101.6 in December. The level of the indicator thus signals that business and consumer sentiment is somewhat stronger than normal.

Business: Much stronger than normal situation in retail trade
The confidence indicator for the business sector rose six points in December and has now risen for nine consecutive months. All economic sectors made a positive contribution and the indicator´s level shows that the situation in the business sector is somewhat stronger than normal. It is currently at its highest level since the spring of 2008. The strong situation in the retail trade in particular boosted the level, but the situation in the private service sector is now somewhat stronger than normal.

Consumer: Household optimism somewhat weaker in December
Consumer confidence in the economy was somewhat more negative in December than the previous month and the Consumer Confidence Indicator (CCI) has fallen from 11.4 to 8.8. Households are somewhat less optimistic about both their personal finances and the Swedish economy. Attitudes to whether it is currently the right time to purchase consumer durables are also more negative, as are expectations about the future employment trend.
