Research at NIER

NIER's research is focused primarily on the areas of Macroeconomics and Environmental Economics. In macroeconomics, one important part of NIER's work is the development of econometric models that are used, among other things, for medium-term analyses. In environmental economics, there is currently a project to develop environmental accounting as a complement to traditional national accounts. For this purpose, NIER has devised a model for analysing the environmental impact of such factors as economic growth, technological development, environmental regulation, and environmental taxes. The research findings are published in the serie of reports entitled Working Paper.

Macroeconomic research

NIER conducts applied research to gain a better knowledge and understanding of macroeconomic processes. Research and development is aimed primarily at evaluating and developing NIER's forecasting methods.

Enviromental economic research

The Environmental Economic Research Division at Sweden's National Institute of Economic Research conducts economic impact analyses to provide a better basis for decisions on Sweden's environmental policy.

With the environmental quality objectives adopted by the Swedish Parliament, environmental policy decisions must meet higher standards of cost effectiveness and be preceded by economic impact analyses. We evaluate environmental policy instruments through our research, our commissioned assignments and our work on developing models.
